The result is less a conventional action game than a platform for creating stories, machines, and disasters with friends.

Players summon props, vehicles, NPCs, weapons, and map assets from a huge spawn menu, then use the Physics Gun and Tool Gun to move, freeze, weld, rope, duplicate, and program them into functioning creations. Building a vehicle can be as simple as attaching wheels to a bathtub, while ambitious creators assemble aircraft, automated defenses, scripted gadgets, or elaborate contraptions that react to buttons and sensors. Offline play works well for experimentation and screenshots, but multiplayer is where the unpredictable social side takes over. Community servers support everything from role-play and survival to racing, cinematic machinima, and familiar modes such as Trouble in Terrorist Town, where hidden traitors sabotage a group while innocents try to identify them.

The Workshop and decades of fan-made addons give the sandbox unusual longevity, adding maps, character models, tools, vehicles, weapons, and entirely new rulesets. Prop Hunt remains a standout party mode by letting players disguise themselves as ordinary objects, creating hide-and-seek matches full of paranoia and comedy. Compared with Minecraft, it offers less resource gathering and survival structure, but far more immediate object manipulation and a wider range of multiplayer experiments. Garry’s Mod suits inventive builders, casual groups looking for laughs, and veteran mod fans alike, though newcomers get the most from joining a well-moderated server or experimenting with a few popular addons first.
