A stolen cosmic core leaves the universe exposed, sending a band of defenders across hostile planets to recover it from ancient, godlike Sirens. Gatekeeper is a fast top-down action roguelite built around dense enemy swarms, escalating weapon effects, and the constant pressure of surviving one more arena. Its science-fiction world feels colorful and strange rather than grim, but the fights quickly become demanding as alien creatures flood the screen and bosses test how well a build holds together. The story mainly provides a reason to keep pushing forward; the real draw is the chaos of an increasingly powerful run.

Runs begin by selecting a hero whose active abilities and combat style shape the early game, then gaining experience from defeated enemies to choose upgrades. Shooting, repositioning, dodging attacks, and timing abilities form the basic rhythm, while artifacts add passive effects that can radically change damage, movement, defenses, or crowd control. Totem-defense challenges act as key objectives on planets, requiring players to hold territory under pressure before routes to later zones become available. More than a hundred collectible items encourage experimentation, and online co-op lets a group combine different characters and build synergies while enemies scale into a much louder, more hectic threat.

Gatekeeper stands out through its focused objective structure: it is not only about clearing rooms, but also protecting crucial devices and preparing for varied planetary encounters. The art direction favors luminous alien landscapes and readable effects, helping players track the mayhem even when a build starts filling the battlefield with projectiles. Randomized upgrades give it much of the replay value associated with Risk of Rain 2 and Vampire Survivors, though its top-down aiming and defensive objectives make it feel more deliberate than a pure auto-shooter.
