Sera is collapsing under the first waves of the Locust invasion, and every mission carries the weight of a desperate military evacuation. Gears Tactics trades the series’ cover-shooter format for aggressive turn-based squad combat without losing its muddy battlefields, oversized weapons, and grim determination. Set twelve years before the original Gears of War, the campaign follows Gabe Diaz as he gathers survivors and hunts Ukkon, a Locust scientist responsible for creating ever more dangerous monsters. The tone is relentlessly tense and violent, balancing character drama with the satisfaction of blowing apart enemies using a Lancer rifle or a well-placed grenade.

Combat revolves around four-person squads, action points, cover, flanking, overwatch, and abilities that reward pushing forward rather than sitting in defensive positions. Soldiers can perform executions on downed enemies, granting extra actions to nearby allies and turning risky advances into momentum-building plays. Between operations, Gabe recruits new troops, assigns armor and weapon modifications, unlocks class skills, and prepares specialists such as Vanguard, Sniper, Support, and Scout units for increasingly punishing encounters. Missions include rescue jobs, convoy defenses, scavenging runs, and story battles, while huge boss creatures force the squad to adapt to changing arenas and devastating attacks.

What separates it from more methodical tactics games is its speed: enemies swarm constantly, abilities chain together, and the most effective strategy usually involves pressing the advantage. There is no percentage-based shooting lottery in the usual XCOM sense, so line of sight, cover, range, and positioning feel more readable, though higher difficulties still demand careful planning and smart squad builds. Its campaign is linear rather than a sprawling strategic sandbox, but the class customization, optional missions, and Ironman-style veteran challenge settings provide enough depth for repeat runs. Fans of XCOM, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate, or Gears’ brutal world find a focused, polished tactical campaign here, while newcomers benefit from its clear rules and energetic pacing.
