A missed trip to school turns into an absurd detour through Gensokyo, the strange fantasy realm associated with Touhou Project. Armed with nothing more intimidating than an air-hockey paddle, an ordinary outsider stumbles into a looming crisis alongside shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei and magician Marisa Kirisame. The tone is knowingly silly rather than dramatic, mixing anime-style character encounters with jokes, awkward conversations, and occasional live-action surprises. Gensokyo Odyssey treats its world-saving plot as an excuse for a playful, deliberately offbeat adventure where charm is in very short supply.

Most of the journey revolves around talking to Gensokyo’s large cast, pursuing leads, and making choices that shape how the story develops. Conflicts trade traditional weapon combat for air-hockey-inspired battles, asking players to use the paddle in unusual confrontations that fit the game’s comedy-first personality. Dialogue matters as much as fighting, since the protagonist’s responses and relationships can steer scenes in different directions. Multiple endings give the adventure a reason to revisit it, especially for players who want to see alternate outcomes and seek out more of the character interactions.

Its biggest strength is the willingness to turn a familiar fan setting into something aggressively weird. Rather than trying to imitate Touhou’s bullet-hell roots, it builds a smaller-scale comedy adventure around recognizable faces, bizarre premises, and a combat gimmick that immediately separates it from standard visual novels or RPGs. The live-action material adds another layer of unpredictability, making the experience feel like a fan project unafraid to lean into its own jokes. Touhou fans looking for character banter and parody will get the most from it, while newcomers can still enjoy the nonsense if they are comfortable with references they may not fully catch.
