A grieving father and his young son cross a harsh Norse wilderness where every quiet moment can turn into a fight for survival. God of War trades the series’ old Greek setting for snowbound forests, ruined temples, and realms shaped by Norse legend, while keeping Kratos’ anger close to the surface. The central journey is personal rather than merely vengeful: Kratos must teach Atreus how to endure a dangerous world without passing on the cruelty that has defined his own life. It is a weighty, cinematic action adventure, but its best scenes earn their emotion through the uneasy bond between its two leads.

Combat revolves around the Leviathan Axe, a satisfyingly heavy weapon that can be thrown, recalled, upgraded, and combined with elemental runic attacks. Kratos blocks, parries, dodges, stuns enemies, and switches to brutal bare-handed strikes, while Atreus supports him with arrows, summons, and abilities that become increasingly useful as the story develops. Exploration branches away from the main path into puzzle-filled ruins, optional boss encounters, collectible treasure, and realm-traveling side quests, with gear, armor, enchantments, and skill trees providing meaningful customization. Several difficulty settings make the campaign approachable for story-focused players, while its tougher modes demand careful timing and knowledge of enemy behavior; this is a strictly single-player adventure.

Its unbroken over-the-shoulder camera gives battles and conversations an unusual immediacy, making the world feel like one continuous journey instead of a sequence of disconnected levels. The Lake of Nine functions as a gradually expanding hub, rewarding players who return with new tools and a willingness to search for hidden paths. On PC, unlocked frame rates, ultrawide support, extensive visual settings, controller compatibility, and mouse-and-keyboard controls help the already striking presentation scale well across different hardware. Fans of cinematic adventures such as The Last of Us or character-driven action games like Devil May Cry will find a more deliberate, grounded combat system here, and both newcomers and long-time Kratos followers have an excellent place to start.
