You play Tommy Vercetti, a recently released mob enforcer whose first job in Vice City collapses into a violent scramble for money, revenge, and influence. The story moves through corrupt businessmen, biker gangs, Cuban and Haitian street wars, and eccentric local power players, all delivered with the exaggerated swagger of a classic gangster film. Its mood is sun-drenched and playful on the surface, but Tommy’s takeover is ruthless, making the city feel both glamorous and dangerous.

Most of your time is spent accepting missions, driving across two major islands, shooting rivals, escaping police attention, and causing as much unscripted trouble as you want between story objectives. Tommy can steal a huge range of cars, boats, motorcycles, and aircraft, while the mission roster mixes chases, timed deliveries, assassinations, gang fights, races, and chaotic set pieces. Money gradually buys weapons, safehouses, businesses, and income-producing properties, turning the campaign into a simple but satisfying criminal empire climb. Optional activities such as taxi work, vigilante missions, ambulance runs, stunt jumps, rampages, and hidden packages give completionists plenty to chase, though the older aiming, driving physics, and occasional mission difficulty spikes show the game’s age.

Vice City stands apart through its sharply defined setting: it is not merely an open city, but a loving, satirical take on Miami crime culture, fashion, music, and excess. The radio stations do enormous work, making even a routine drive memorable with pop, rock, metal, Latin music, talk shows, and advertisements that sell the era’s mood. Compared with later Grand Theft Auto entries, its world is smaller and its systems are simpler, yet that compact scale keeps missions focused and navigation painless. Fans of Grand Theft Auto III, San Andreas, Scarface, or arcade-like open-world crime stories should find it essential, while newcomers should arrive ready for a deliberately old-school challenge.
