GUN (2005)

A dusty frontier of mining towns, scorched plains, and crooked saloons frames Colton White’s revenge story after a violent loss leaves him hunting for answers. GUN is a compact third-person Western action adventure from Neversoft, built around bloody shootouts, horseback chases, and a pulpy tale of betrayal. Its version of the Old West is harsh and exaggerated rather than historically subtle, with corrupt officials, bandits, bounty targets, and frontier violence driving nearly every encounter.

Colton alternates between story missions and optional work across several open regions, riding between towns, canyons, forests, mines, and deserts on horseback. Gunfights use an over-the-shoulder aiming system, cover, quick draws, and a Concentration meter that slows time for precise shots; enemies can be disarmed, wounded, or dispatched with explosive force. The arsenal ranges from revolvers and rifles to shotguns, dynamite, bows, and mounted Gatling guns, while melee attacks and stealth kills add rougher close-range options. Side activities include bounty hunting, poker, horse races, hunting, and delivery jobs, with money and upgrades improving weapons, ammunition capacity, and riding performance.

What separates GUN from later open-world Westerns is its brisk, arcade-like pace: it delivers a frontier sandbox without the enormous scale or deliberate realism of Red Dead Redemption. Train assaults, mounted battles, buffalo hunts, and defend-the-town set pieces keep the campaign varied, even if the world feels small by modern standards and some design choices have aged noticeably. The cast, cinematic presentation, and grimy atmosphere still sell the revenge fantasy, while the straightforward controls make it easy to pick up.
