Zagreus, the defiant son of Hades, treats escaping the Greek Underworld as both a family rebellion and an endlessly replayable action challenge. Hades is a fast, stylish roguelike dungeon crawler where every failed attempt becomes part of an ongoing story rather than a simple reset. Its take on mythology is witty, human, and surprisingly warm, balancing furious combat against bickering gods, sympathetic monsters, and a father-son conflict with real emotional weight. The mood is colorful and energetic even when you are cutting through the dead, backed by a superb soundtrack and richly painted environments.

Each run sends Zagreus through shifting chambers filled with enemies, traps, rewards, shops, and major boss encounters on the route toward the surface. He begins with one of several radically different Infernal Arms, from a sword and shield to a bow, spear, fists, and firearm-like rail, then layers Olympian Boons onto attacks, dashes, casts, and special moves. Zeus may add chain lightning, Athena can deflect attacks, Poseidon pushes foes around, and dozens of other gifts combine into builds that reward experimentation. Permanent upgrades through the Mirror of Night soften the learning curve, while weapon aspects and escalating challenge modifiers give experienced players plenty to master.

What separates Hades from many roguelikes is how completely it commits to narrative momentum: characters react to deaths, victories, chosen weapons, and repeated encounters, so returning home always reveals something new. The voice acting is exceptional, and the cast includes memorable versions of Nyx, Achilles, Megaera, Cerberus, Thanatos, and the Olympian gods without turning the mythological setting into homework. Runs are concise enough for quick sessions but deep enough that experimenting with boon synergies, weapon forms, and difficulty settings stays rewarding for dozens of hours. Fans of Dead Cells’ responsive combat, Diablo-style build crafting, or Supergiant’s storytelling should consider Hades essential, while newcomers benefit from its flexible progression and unusually forgiving approach to failure.
