Hard To Be A God

Arkanar is a brutal feudal world viewed through the eyes of an outsider who possesses knowledge far beyond its age. Hard To Be A God blends party-based RPG adventuring with political intrigue, espionage, and a distinctly Russian science-fiction premise inspired by the Strugatsky brothers’ novel. Its hero is a highly trained Earth operative sent to influence events without openly overturning the primitive society around him, though access to futuristic equipment makes that restraint increasingly difficult. The mood is less heroic fantasy than dirty, suspicious court drama, where every noble, soldier, and faction can become part of a larger scheme.

Moment-to-moment play revolves around travelling between settlements, talking to characters, accepting missions, and choosing how aggressively to involve yourself in Arkanar’s conflicts. Combat unfolds in real time but allows active pausing, letting players issue orders, position companions, and make use of attacks that stun, disarm, or otherwise disrupt enemies. Character growth focuses on building the protagonist’s combat and diplomatic capabilities while acquiring advanced devices that fill the role usually occupied by spells in fantasy RPGs. A global map connects varied regions and produces encounters along the road, while terrain affects travel pace and makes movement feel more deliberate than a simple menu hop.

Its strongest idea is the collision of mud-and-castle medieval life with covert technology from a vastly superior civilization. Rather than presenting magic as the answer to every problem, the game treats high-tech tools as dangerous advantages in a society unable to understand them, giving its RPG systems an unusual identity. Companion management adds another layer, since hired fighters and volunteers require different approaches and can influence how battles are handled. Hard To Be A God suits players who enjoy older, ambitious European RPGs such as The Temple of Elemental Evil or early Gothic, especially those willing to tolerate rough edges in return for dense atmosphere, tactical pauses, and a more unusual science-fiction setting.
