A savage dark-fantasy shooter, Hedon trades military corridors for ancient ruins, subterranean cities, cursed forests, and a world packed with hostile creatures and buried history. You play a fierce orc warrior fighting through a strange realm where arcane magic, steel, and industrial-looking weapons coexist. Its mood lands somewhere between classic Doom’s aggression and Hexen’s occult fantasy, but the campaign is much more interested in making its spaces feel lived in than simply pushing you through combat arenas. Blood, secrets, environmental storytelling, and surprisingly dense lore give the adventure a heavier atmosphere than its retro-inspired visuals initially suggest.

Combat is fast, loud, and brutally physical, with an arsenal that mixes shotguns, automatic weapons, axes, explosive tools, and magical attacks. Enemies and resources are deliberately placed rather than endlessly generated, so difficulty settings meaningfully alter encounters and force more careful use of health, ammunition, and armor. Progress often depends on scouring expansive maps for keys, switches, alternate routes, and concealed passages, with backtracking forming a major part of the loop. Hedon rarely points directly to the next objective, asking players to read the environment, remember locked doors, and patiently piece together how its interconnected levels function.

What separates Hedon from many retro FPS throwbacks is its commitment to large-scale exploration rather than nonstop arena clearing. Levels feel closer to adventure-game spaces or the older maze-like design of Doom and Hexen, full of optional rewards, shortcuts, strange details, and areas that gain new purpose later. The hand-built campaign rewards curiosity and observation, while the gore-heavy action ensures that long stretches of investigation still end in satisfying violence. It suits veteran FPS players who miss demanding 1990s level design and want a more atmospheric, fantasy-leaning alternative to straightforward boomer shooters; newcomers can enjoy the weapons and spectacle, but should expect to get lost before they get comfortable.
