Corrupted medieval realms, shrieking gargoyles, and spell-slinging combat give this first-person shooter a darker fantasy identity than its sci-fi contemporaries. You play Corvus, a lone Sidhe elf fighting back against the Serpent Riders and the armies they unleash across ruined cities, volcanic caverns, and hostile strongholds. Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders uses the classic Doom-era engine, but its mood is more arcane and adventurous, trading shotguns and space stations for enchanted staves, undead monasteries, and demonic sorcery. The result is fast, tough, and satisfyingly old-school, with maze-like levels that reward alert exploration.

Most of the action revolves around hunting keys, locating switches, uncovering secret rooms, and blasting through dense packs of monsters before reaching each episode’s exit. Corvus carries seven weapons, beginning with a basic staff and progressing to magical tools such as the Dragon Claw, Hellstaff, and devastating Phoenix Rod, each with its own ammunition and attack rhythm. A Tome of Power temporarily transforms every weapon into a stronger alternate form, turning routine encounters into spectacular bursts of destruction when used at the right moment. Artifacts add another layer of tactical choice: players can fly over hazards, become briefly invulnerable, heal, or trigger area-clearing magic, while ammunition and health conservation keep the campaign tense on higher difficulties.

What separates Heretic from other early shooters is how naturally its fantasy systems fit the familiar run-and-gun foundation. Levels feel more vertical and secret-filled than many games of its era, and its visual palette of stone temples, lava, mossy ruins, and occult architecture still has a distinctive grim fairy-tale character. The Shadow of the Serpent Riders edition expands the adventure with additional episodes, giving veteran players more labyrinthine maps and punishing encounters to master. Network multiplayer supports cooperative campaign runs and competitive deathmatches, making it a strong pick for Doom fans who want similar speed and precision with richer weapons, items, and fantasy atmosphere.
