The mood is cold, darkly funny, and wonderfully tense, with Jesper Kyd’s score giving every successful escape a sinister elegance.

Success comes from studying a target’s habits, finding access routes, stealing disguises, and turning ordinary scenery into a weapon. Agent 47 can poison food, stage falls, create distractions, hide bodies, take hostages, or simply use a suppressed pistol when subtlety collapses; the best solutions usually look like accidents. The Blood Money system rewards quiet, low-profile contracts with cash, while sloppy work raises notoriety and leaves witnesses, cameras, and police reports to manage through bribes. Earnings fund customized weapons and useful intelligence, and the AI reacts to suspicious behavior, abandoned objects, visible blood, and uniforms that do not quite belong in the area.

What makes Blood Money endure is the freedom within each compact sandbox: a mission can be completed through careful reconnaissance, quick improvisation, or outright chaos, and every approach produces a different story. Its levels are dense rather than enormous, packed with routines, secrets, alternate exits, and memorable targets that reward repeated attempts. Some interface choices and movement feel dated beside later Hitman entries, but the core design remains remarkably sharp and readable. Fans of stealth sandboxes such as Dishonored, Metal Gear Solid V, or the modern World of Assassination trilogy should treat it as essential, while newcomers who can tolerate an older presentation find one of the genre’s strongest foundations.
