Hitman: Codename 47 is a foundational stealth-action game built around patience, observation, and making a clean escape after the target falls. Its five major assignments take Agent 47 through varied locations including Hong Kong, Colombia, Budapest, and Rotterdam, with each mission feeding into his unsettling origin story. The mood is cold, tense, and deliberately methodical, rewarding players who treat every contract as a problem to solve rather than a shooting gallery.

Before entering a mission, players study target details, choose equipment, and decide how much risk they are willing to take. Contracts allow for poisoned food, planted explosives, sniper shots, close-range kills, disguises, and carefully timed ambushes, although the early disguise system is less flexible than in later Hitman entries. Money earned from successful work pays for weapons, gear, and hired support, giving preparation genuine weight. Combat is available when plans collapse, but 47 is far more effective when he watches patrols, avoids witnesses, and uses the environment to create an exit nobody notices.
