I Am Alive

A ruined American city becomes a hostile maze of collapsed freeways, poisoned streets, and desperate people in this tense survival adventure. Set a year after an unexplained global catastrophe, the story follows Adam as he searches the shattered remains of Haventon for his missing wife and daughter. The mood is bleak, lonely, and grounded rather than bombastic, with every bottle of water, painkiller, and usable weapon carrying real value. Survival rarely feels heroic here; it feels like making one more difficult decision with too little left in your bag.

Traversal drives much of the experience, as Adam climbs damaged skyscrapers, edges along precarious ledges, and searches apartments, wreckage, and side routes for supplies. Stamina is a constant concern, particularly during long climbs or while moving through hazardous dust clouds, so planning a safe route matters as much as quick reactions. Combat is deliberately scarce and dangerous: firearms have very limited ammunition, melee encounters drain precious stamina, and an empty pistol can still intimidate enemies if they believe it is loaded. Hostile groups react differently depending on the situation, forcing you to judge when to bluff, when to surrender resources, and when a fight is unavoidable. The PC version adds adjustable visual settings, flexible controller and keyboard support, an easier difficulty option, and level replay for revisiting paths and missed caches.

What separates I Am Alive from broader post-apocalyptic action games is its focus on vulnerability and social uncertainty. Encounters with strangers can lead to rescue, trade, ambush, or a brutal confrontation, and the game makes those moments feel unpredictable without turning them into elaborate dialogue systems. Its compact, linear structure and occasionally rough presentation show their age, but the oppressive dust-choked city and climbing-focused survival design still give it a distinct identity. Players who enjoy the resource pressure of The Last of Us or the uneasy urban survival atmosphere of This War of Mine, but want a shorter action-oriented experience, find plenty to appreciate; newcomers should use Easy mode, while veterans can chase better routes and tougher resource management.
