IIslands of War

A shattered world hangs above the clouds, with entire settlements, pirate dens, and hostile strongholds rebuilt as armed floating islands. Islands of War is an indie vehicle-combat sandbox built around designing a personal airborne fortress and taking it into unpredictable sky battles. Its tone is playful in its block-built construction, but combat carries real tension when enemy islands surround you and every exposed component becomes a target. Travelling between regions also gives the adventure a light exploration layer, with merchants, abandoned areas, factions, and valuable salvage waiting beyond the next warp.

Building serves as the heart of the experience: players arrange structural blocks into an island shape, then outfit it with guns, defensive systems, power reactors, batteries, and specialized attachments. Weapons and modules map to preferred keys, allowing a nimble gunship, a shield-heavy bruiser, or an awkward but devastating artillery platform to function according to its own layout. Battles reward targeting choices rather than simple damage output, since destroying an opponent’s floatation hardware sends it plummeting while rupturing its warp core produces a more immediate explosion. Procedurally assembled opponents keep encounters from feeling identical, and differing enemy types demand that players adjust their design, loadout, and approach.

Loot adds another layer of experimentation, with more than 150 items that can be combined, upgraded through several quality levels, and enhanced through tech infusions. Individual equipment can gain useful traits such as stronger armor, quicker cooldown recovery, extra health, or attacks that pierce defenses, so even small finds can reshape a build. The freeform editor and component-focused destruction give it some of the same inventive appeal as Besiege or From the Depths, though its focus stays on compact aerial islands rather than engineering simulation. It suits tinkerers who enjoy refining machines as much as fighting with them, especially players looking for a single-player sandbox where every victory comes from a design they built themselves.
