Infernax (v1.05.017)

A brutal curse has turned the land of Upel into a monster-infested nightmare, and armored crusader Alcedor returns home just in time to find villages falling apart around him. Infernax is a demanding 8-bit action-adventure that channels the atmosphere of Castlevania II, Zelda II, and old-school gothic horror without softening their rough edges. Its pixel-art countryside, ruined towns, catacombs, and towering castles feel suitably bleak, while the violence is gleefully excessive and often darkly funny. The result is a compact but surprisingly flexible quest built around killing demons, helping desperate locals, and deciding what kind of hero Alcedor becomes.

Most of the adventure revolves around traveling an interconnected overworld, entering dangerous castles, and steadily gaining the tools needed to survive harsher regions. Alcedor begins with a simple mace, but earns experience from enemies, spends gold at blacksmiths and merchants, improves his health and magic, and acquires spells or relics that open up new routes. Combat is deliberately weighty: enemy patterns, jump timing, knockback, hazards, and limited healing demand patience rather than button mashing, especially during the game’s punishing boss encounters. Decisions made during quests can alter rewards, story paths, the state of settlements, and which of several endings you reach, so even seemingly straightforward acts of mercy or violence carry consequences.

What separates Infernax from a standard retro throwback is its willingness to combine strict arcade-era challenge with meaningful role-playing choices and secrets worth revisiting. Its world is open enough to reward curiosity, with hidden dungeons, alternate equipment, optional quests, and route changes that make repeat runs feel genuinely different rather than merely faster. The soundtrack, chunky visuals, and grisly monster design perfectly sell its lost-NES-cart aesthetic, but the controls and progression remain accessible enough for players new to the genre. Fans of classic Castlevania, Blasphemous, or side-scrolling action RPGs should find plenty to love, provided they can handle a game that expects them to learn from every painful mistake.
