Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl (v2020.06.01)

A warped suburban mall becomes the stage for an old-school brawl packed with Kevin Smith’s trademark lowbrow humor and cartoon violence. Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl channels the spirit of 8-bit side-scrolling beat-’em-ups, sending the familiar duo through crowds of troublemakers, mall security, and bizarre View Askewniverse-inspired villains on the way back to the Quick Stop. Its pixel-art presentation, exaggerated enemies, and chiptune music keep the mood playful rather than gritty. Expect a compact arcade-style adventure built around jokes, punches, and increasingly absurd boss fights.

Combat revolves around walking the mall’s corridors, clearing groups of enemies, and making smart use of each character’s abilities. Solo players can switch between Jay and Silent Bob during a fight, giving encounters a small tactical edge when one fighter is better positioned for the situation. Two local players can instead take control of one character each, making it a far more natural couch co-op button-masher. Standard combos, jumping attacks, throws, and improvised weapons give the action more variety than a simple one-button brawler, while large stages and boss encounters break up the usual street-fight rhythm.

The strongest appeal lies in how confidently it commits to its NES-era inspirations without completely abandoning modern responsiveness. Environments have the deliberately chunky, colorful look of a lost cartridge game, but the fighting feels cleaner and more readable than many of the titles it imitates. References to Clerks, Mallrats, and the wider View Askew universe reward longtime fans, especially when enemies and bosses escalate into pure nonsense, including a pretzel-headed threat and an opponent defined by an enormous fist. Players who enjoy River City Ransom, Double Dragon, or short co-op beat-’em-ups will find an entertaining retro distraction here, while the character swapping makes solo play more engaging than expected.
