A mountain stronghold becomes a living monument to greed, cruelty, and careful planning in this unusually deep dungeon-management roguelike. KeeperRL casts you as an evil wizard building a subterranean domain while neighboring villages, castles, monsters, and would-be heroes react to your growing threat. Its tone is gleefully dark but often unpredictable, mixing black magic and prisoner interrogation with the practical concerns of feeding workers, defending hallways, and stopping a misplaced fire from becoming a catastrophe. Beneath the pixel-art presentation sits a simulation-heavy sandbox where every campaign develops its own disasters and triumphs.

Most of the time, you dig rooms, assign jobs, recruit creatures, stockpile resources, manufacture gear, and design defenses that turn invasions into slaughterhouses. Minions train, carry equipment, use consumables, research arcane disciplines, and eventually become specialized forces capable of raiding the surface for loot and captives. Direct control shifts the perspective into a tactical, turn-based roguelike, allowing you to lead a creature through dangerous expeditions, use spells and special attacks, and deal with injuries such as poisoning, blindness, or lost limbs. Research expands the fortress with alchemy, sorcery, mutations, and new construction options, while traps, doors, corridors, and creature placement let you shape every assault route.

KeeperRL stands apart by marrying the broad oversight of Dungeon Keeper-style base building with the close-up danger of traditional roguelikes such as ADOM or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Fire spreads, equipment matters, enemies make use of the same kinds of tools available to you, and the surrounding map provides more than a simple source of raids: dragons, witches, rival lairs, and human settlements all become potential targets. An adventurer mode also lets players tackle generated dungeons from the other side, making the systems feel less one-sided. It suits players who enjoy complex emergent stories and can tolerate a learning curve; patient strategy fans get far more from it than those seeking a streamlined management game.
