Lair of the Clockwork God (v1.016)

A mismatched pair of heroes tries to prevent reality from collapsing while arguing over the correct way to play a video game. Ben approaches every crisis as a point-and-click adventure veteran, stuffing his pockets with absurd objects and searching for the one bizarre combination that will solve a puzzle. Dan, meanwhile, treats the apocalypse like a slick indie platformer, sprinting through hazards, making precision jumps, and trying to look emotionally sincere while doing it. Lair of the Clockwork God turns their clash of genres into a sharp, very funny adventure packed with fourth-wall jokes, failed heroics, and escalating cosmic danger.

Progress comes from constantly switching between the two characters and using their radically different skills in tandem. Dan handles the fast, side-scrolling action sections, leaping across deadly environments, dodging traps, collecting useful items, and reaching places Ben cannot access. Ben investigates scenes in classic adventure-game fashion, talks to a bizarre supporting cast, gathers junk, and solves inventory puzzles that often require lateral thinking rather than simple item matching. Neither hero can save the day alone: Dan may retrieve a vital component, but Ben must figure out why it matters, while Ben’s discoveries frequently unlock the next platforming route. The game remains single-player, but its cooperative design makes controlling both leads feel like managing an intentionally dysfunctional team.

What separates it from ordinary genre mash-ups is how thoroughly it understands both sides of the joke. Its platforming is responsive enough to stand on its own, while the adventure sections gleefully poke at moon logic, obtuse puzzle design, and the nostalgia surrounding 1990s classics. Hand-drawn cartoon visuals, dense dialogue, and a stream of genre satire give it the energy of a British comedy series that happens to include end-of-the-world stakes. Fans of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Thomas Was Alone, or irreverent indie comedy find plenty to enjoy, though newcomers should be ready for puzzles that occasionally demand experimentation.
