A late-night welfare check in rural Kansas turns into an unnerving descent through memory, decay, and forces that refuse ordinary explanation. Lake Haven – Chrysalis is a short first-person horror adventure that follows Detective Zeke Reynold after an elderly caller reports her friend Eleanor Robertson missing. What begins as a routine investigation quickly becomes a deeply personal nightmare, with the game leaning on dread, isolation, and disturbing imagery rather than cheap action-heavy scares. Its deliberately lo-fi presentation evokes the uneasy atmosphere of late-1990s survival horror, complete with rough-edged visuals that make every shadow feel suspicious.

Zeke searches a compact but carefully detailed environment for evidence of Eleanor’s fate, examining notes, objects, locked spaces, and environmental oddities that gradually reshape the case. Progress comes through observation and puzzle-solving: players connect clues, locate useful items, and work out how to access the next layer of the mystery. There is no emphasis on fighting enemies or character builds; the tension comes from being vulnerable, unsure what is real, and constantly anticipating the next surreal revelation. The pacing is measured and investigative, although the prologue format means it functions more as a concentrated opening chapter than a full-length detective campaign.

What stands out is how confidently Chrysalis uses its restricted scope to create a sense of place. Lake Haven feels worn down and lived in, while its grim clues and increasingly bizarre scenes suggest a larger mythology without explaining everything too soon. Fans of PS1-era horror, Silent Hill’s psychological unease, or indie mysteries built around exploration rather than combat should find plenty to appreciate in its oppressive mood. Newcomers can finish it without needing genre expertise, while horror veterans will likely enjoy picking through its visual details and unanswered questions before the larger Lake Haven story arrives.
