Across both Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, the tone is tragic, theatrical, and unusually thoughtful, built around ancient prophecies, bitter rivalries, and a world visibly decaying under supernatural rule. The package preserves the original story and performances while offering rebuilt visuals that can be swapped for the classic presentation whenever you want.

Combat is deliberate rather than combo-heavy: Raziel tears into enemies with claws, throws telekinetic force, finds usable weapons in the environment, and eventually relies on his spectral blade. Defeated foes leave behind souls, which serve as both your sustenance and a key part of surviving encounters, especially after Raziel’s physical body is damaged. The defining mechanic is realm shifting, allowing Raziel to move between the solid Material Realm and the warped Spectral Realm; architecture changes, barriers vanish, and puzzles often demand that you understand how each version of a location fits together. Exploration is central, with interconnected ruins, locked routes, boss encounters, environmental puzzles, and new abilities gradually opening paths that were previously inaccessible.

What still separates Soul Reaver from many action games is its sense of place: broken cathedrals, drowned cities, vampire strongholds, and surreal spirit-world distortions make Nosgoth feel like a genuine ruined civilization rather than a chain of levels. The remastering improves character models, environments, lighting, and presentation without replacing the games’ stylized, late-1990s identity, while useful extras such as maps and behind-the-scenes material make the collection friendlier than the originals. Players who enjoy the moody exploration of classic Tomb Raider, Zelda-style dungeon progression, or the lore-heavy drama of dark fantasy will find plenty to admire. Combat and camera conventions show their age, but for newcomers and returning fans alike, this is the most convenient way to experience Raziel’s influential two-part story.
