A struggling frontier settlement becomes the center of a demanding medieval fantasy survival sim where every loaf of bread, felled tree, and healthy worker matters. Life is Hard blends the city management pressures of Stronghold with the worker-driven economy associated with The Settlers, then adds a harsher layer of famine, disease, warfare, and divine interference. You begin with only four settlers and a fragile foothold in a hostile land, gradually deciding whether your people grow into a fortified trading town, an expansionist power, or a desperate community barely keeping starvation away. Its mood is less cozy village builder than hard-earned recovery, with setbacks forming part of the intended path to mastery.

Managing the settlement means assigning jobs, gathering resources, producing food, constructing homes and defenses, and keeping a close eye on the needs and abilities of individual citizens. Settlers carry personal skills and traits, so an efficient workforce is never simply a row of interchangeable units; an unreliable miner or talkative woodcutter can affect how smoothly your plans run. Trade with neighboring settlements, craft weapons and armor, attract newcomers, and raise soldiers when diplomacy fails, while protecting the town from enemies such as the necromancer Tenebris. Faith also shapes the strategy: choosing one of six gods grants a supporting hero and a distinct magical toolkit, ranging from restorative Light magic to raising fallen foes as undead, but neglecting your patron risks punishing retaliation.

The most interesting wrinkle is how religion, RPG-style heroes, and settlement logistics feed into one another rather than sitting as separate systems. Political choices add further weight, letting you resist the Northern Kingdom or accept vassalage, with no route presented as completely safe or clean. Repeated attempts are central to the design, as changing settlers, gods, and priorities encourage different solutions to the same unforgiving problems. Players who enjoy Banished-style resource tension but want more combat, fantasy magic, and old-school strategy influence should find plenty to engage with, while newcomers should expect a steep learning curve and frequent early failures.
