A spotless corporate research complex becomes a lethal maze when every patch of darkness acts like an instant death trap. Lightmatter is a first-person puzzle adventure built around a wonderfully simple rule: stay in the light, or die. As an unnamed test subject navigates the headquarters of Lightmatter Technologies, the company’s polished promises of renewable energy begin to sound increasingly sinister. Virgil, the facility’s charismatic CEO and constant narrator, supplies sardonic commentary that gives the sterile halls an unsettling, darkly funny edge.

Progress comes from studying each room, tracing light sources, and manipulating the environment so safe paths exist where shadows once blocked the way. Lamps, power cells, movable platforms, rotating beams, and other devices gradually turn straightforward navigation into carefully planned spatial puzzles. There is no combat and little room for brute force; falling into a dark corner, misjudging a jump, or interrupting a beam usually means a quick reset and another attempt. Challenges introduce ideas at a measured pace before combining them into tougher tests, making observation and lateral thinking far more valuable than fast reflexes.

What separates Lightmatter from the usual Portal-inspired puzzle game is how completely it commits to light as both tool and hazard. Its clean, high-contrast environments make every illuminated surface, black void, and projected shadow easy to read, while the central mechanic remains flexible enough to support clever late-game twists. David Bateson’s performance as Virgil adds real personality, delivering corporate optimism and unsettling jokes with the smooth confidence of a villain who may be hiding something. Fans of Portal, The Talos Principle, and first-person brainteasers should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they prefer concise, focused puzzle design over an enormous open world.
