Game Overview

Olathe is a sun-bleached, male-only wasteland where civilization has collapsed into gangs, cults, drunks, and deeply damaged survivors. LISA: The Painful follows Brad Armstrong, an aging martial artist searching for the one person who may still give this miserable world a reason to matter. Its pixel-art presentation and deliberately crude jokes initially suggest an oddball retro RPG, but the humor steadily curdles into something bleak, uncomfortable, and surprisingly personal. Every stretch of road feels like a bad decision waiting to become permanent.

Combat uses turn-based battles with timed button inputs, letting Brad and his companions chain together martial-arts combinations, dirty tricks, and bizarre special abilities. Roaming the side-scrolling overworld means scavenging for supplies, finding hidden routes, recruiting a large cast of oddball fighters, and deciding which dangers are worth facing. The central tension comes from irreversible choices: party members can die, Brad can lose limbs and combat options, and precious equipment or abilities may be demanded as payment for survival. Joy, a drug that grants strength while feeding Brad’s addiction, adds another sharp risk-versus-reward layer to an already punishing journey.

What separates LISA: The Painful from most post-apocalyptic RPGs is its willingness to make consequences mechanical rather than merely dramatic. Its ruined world is hilarious in a nasty, absurd way, yet the comedy never cancels out the brutality of Brad’s past or the ugliness of the people around him. Multiple party combinations, hidden areas, different decisions, and its uncompromising approach to loss give repeat runs real value, although first-time players should expect setbacks and emotional discomfort. Fans of EarthBound’s strange presentation, dark indie storytelling, and challenging RPGs such as Undertale will find a far harsher but memorable counterpart here; newcomers can enjoy it too, provided they accept that mercy rarely comes without a cost.
