A grim pilgrimage through the ruined kingdom of Mournstead gives this Soulslike a memorable identity: every road exists in both the physical realm of Axiom and the corpse-strewn nightmare of Umbral. As the Dark Crusader, you race to stop the demon god Adyr’s return, confronting decayed holy orders, grotesque undead, and massive monsters amid crumbling cathedrals and blighted valleys. Its tone is relentlessly bleak, but the world’s dark-fantasy imagery and strange, sorrowful characters make the journey feel more like an archaeological descent than a simple monster hunt.

Combat rewards patience, positioning, and a willingness to learn enemy patterns, while still moving faster than many genre peers. You combine light and heavy weapon strikes, blocks, parries, dodges, ranged tools, spells, and temporary buffs, then shape a build around strength, agility, radiance, inferno, or a hybrid approach. The Umbral Lamp is the central mechanic: it reveals alternate paths, pulls enemies’ souls for damage, and lets you cross into the land of the dead to solve environmental obstacles or recover after a fatal blow. Staying in Umbral becomes increasingly dangerous as enemies multiply, turning death into a tense second chance rather than an immediate reset. Nine starting classes offer distinct openings, while weapon upgrades, armor choices, magic, and stats allow extensive experimentation; online co-op supports a companion through the campaign, and hostile players can invade.

Its two-world level design is the strongest reason to play, constantly asking you to reconsider familiar spaces from a more dangerous perspective. Mournstead is densely interconnected, filled with shortcuts, optional bosses, secret routes, NPC quest lines, and equipment worth seeking out, even when its maze-like layouts can be demanding. Fans of Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Lies of P who want a more aggressive combat pace and a distinctive death-realm system will find plenty to enjoy. Newcomers can play it, but veterans of punishing action RPGs are best prepared for its demanding bosses, cryptic progression, and willingness to make every victory feel earned.
