Lost Planet: Extreme Condition mixes third-person shooting with giant-mech action, putting stranded mercenary Wayne Holden between hostile Snow Pirates and the insectoid Akrid that dominate the planet. The campaign carries a pulpy sci-fi tone, complete with corporate conspiracies, lost memories, collapsing colonies, and monsters large enough to turn a routine encounter into a panic. Snowfields, frozen industrial sites, and ruined cities give its battles an isolated, hostile atmosphere that still feels distinct from standard military shooters.

Combat revolves around staying mobile, collecting weapons, and managing Thermal Energy, the resource that powers machinery while also keeping Wayne alive in EDN III’s lethal climate. Enemies drop energy, encouraging aggressive play even when Akrid swarms or pirate squads make a safer position tempting. On foot, players use rifles, shotguns, grenades, and heavy launchers; when the situation escalates, they can hijack Vital Suits, armored combat walkers with their own weapons and abilities. Some levels also feature grappling hooks, fixed defenses, moving platforms, and transformable vehicles, so firefights often shift between ground combat and mechanized destruction. Boss encounters demand attention to weak points and weapon choice rather than simple endurance, though the campaign’s older checkpoint design can make hard sections punishing.

What separates Lost Planet from its contemporaries is the constant pressure created by the heat meter and the satisfying contrast between vulnerable infantry combat and stomping around in a stolen mech. Its huge creatures and weather-beaten environments evoke the monster-hunting spectacle of Earth Defense Force, while its cover shooting and sci-fi militarism sit closer to early Gears of War. Online multiplayer supports large-scale matches for up to 16 players, with maps built around weapons, Vital Suits, and vertical routes.
