A family-friendly African adventure gives Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman a larger playground than their first outing, trading Madagascar’s island setting for the savannahs where they hope to find their roots. The story follows the film’s broad setup as the zoo animals leave the island, suffer another disastrous flight, and land among Africa’s wildlife. Comedy remains the main attraction, with the familiar cast delivering cartoon chaos rather than any serious danger. Bright scenery, exaggerated animations, and simple objectives make the journey feel like a playable Saturday-morning movie.

Players switch between the four central animals, each using distinct moves to handle platforming, chase sequences, environmental tasks, and light combat. Alex relies on athletic attacks, Marty brings speed, Gloria uses her strength, and Melman’s awkward reach helps interact with targets others cannot manage. Levels mix open-ended collecting and straightforward mission goals with short diversions, including vehicle sections and cooperative penguin stages built around directing the birds through hazards toward an exit. Progress unlocks new areas and minigames, while the low punishment and clear visual cues keep the focus on momentum instead of demanding precision.

The penguin missions are the standout, shifting away from ordinary character platforming into puzzle levels that resemble Lemmings, where planning routes and managing a group matters more than reflexes. Africa also gives the game more varied backdrops, from dusty plains and rocky terrain to animal-packed watering holes, even if the overall design remains firmly aimed at younger players. Licensed-movie games from this era often feel disposable, but the changing character abilities and side activities give it more variety than a basic film retelling.
