Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay returns home hoping to leave violence behind, only to watch the family that took him in get slaughtered by the city’s Italian mob. What follows is a focused underworld war as Lincoln tears through the criminal hierarchy district by district. Mafia 3 balances the familiar fantasy of stealing cars and causing chaos with a grim, personal tale about loyalty, trauma, and power.

Lincoln approaches each objective with a mix of stealth, brutal close-quarters takedowns, and loud third-person shootouts built around cover, accurate gunplay, and heavy weapons. Missions generally involve weakening a racket by destroying its income, interrogating informants, eliminating lieutenants, and confronting the boss controlling that part of town. Taking territory lets you assign it to trusted allies, each of whom supplies perks such as weapons deliveries, police backup, vehicle drops, or hired muscle; however, favoring one partner too heavily creates tension with the others. The open city supports fast, aggressive driving, collectibles, side operations, and multiple ways to enter fortified locations, although a good deal of progression follows a deliberately repeated takeover structure.

Its greatest strength is atmosphere: period radio stations, sharply written cutscenes, documentary-style interviews, and a convincing recreation of a Southern city make Lincoln’s campaign memorable even when individual missions blur together. The game also treats its era’s racial hostility as part of the world rather than mere background decoration, adding weight to police encounters and street-level exploration. Driving feels more arcade-like than simulation-focused, while combat favors forceful momentum over the methodical precision of a tactical shooter. Players who enjoy Grand Theft Auto-style open worlds but want a darker, more character-driven crime drama will find plenty to like, especially if they value story and mood over endless sandbox variety.
