Its biggest strength is commitment to the bit: sentient corn behaves like a collection of tired, argumentative coworkers, while a tiny Russian robot bear supplies some of the adventure’s best dry humor. Brightly stylized environments give the farm and laboratory a toy-box quality, but scattered documents and environmental details gradually create a surprisingly coherent mystery. Fans of Portal’s puzzle-led progression, The Stanley Parable’s offbeat writing, or Gone Home-style environmental storytelling should find plenty to enjoy, provided they appreciate comedy that is deliberately strange. Puzzle veterans may occasionally find the item logic obscure, but newcomers can still enjoy Maize as a memorable, weirdly charming narrative adventure.
