Tokyo lies buried beneath sand, steel, and the wreckage of a war humanity is losing. METAL MAX Xeno Reborn turns that bleak premise into a scrappy post-apocalyptic JRPG where survivors fight an all-powerful machine network called NOA with salvaged tanks, oversized cannons, and a remarkably useful battle dog. Its mood balances lonely wasteland travel with knowingly pulpy monster hunting, making every destroyed machine and recovered vehicle feel like a small act of rebellion. The story follows Talis as he searches Dystokio for allies capable of helping reclaim a future from the mechanical invaders.

Combat centers on fast real-time encounters, with players firing weapons, positioning vehicles, and tearing through hostile machines before they overwhelm the party. Tanks are the heart of progression: you find them in the wastes, repair their components, outfit them with new guns and engines, and tune each ride toward heavy damage, mobility, or survival. Dangerous ruins and dungeons also require the group to leave their vehicles behind, adding on-foot exploration to the loop of scavenging, fighting, returning to base, and improving your arsenal. The world allows considerable freedom in where you travel, so well-equipped players can challenge threatening areas early, while tougher battles encourage better preparation rather than simple level grinding.

What separates it from most traditional JRPGs is its fixation on customizable armored vehicles and roaming boss hunts in a ruined, open-ended cityscape. Pochi, the party’s canine fourth member, adds more than charm: feeding and training him unlocks skills, while his presence gives the small cast some warmth amid the dust and devastation. Reborn’s streamlined real-time approach may feel less tactical than classic turn-based Metal Max entries, but its tank tinkering and freeform exploration retain the series’ identity. Fans of Mad Max-style scavenging, Metal Slug’s mechanical excess, or unconventional JRPGs should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they prefer building a personal war machine over following a rigid quest path.
