America’s most absurd rescue mission puts its president inside a heavily armed mech and points him at a military coup. Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a loud, knowingly ridiculous third-person action shooter where Michael Wilson fights to reclaim the United States from traitorous Vice President Richard Hawk and his mechanized army. Battles tear through exaggerated versions of American landmarks, from urban streets and bridges to the White House grounds, with patriotic speeches delivered at maximum volume. The tone is pure arcade spectacle: sincere enough to sell the chaos, but outrageous enough to make every missile barrage funny.

Each mission drops Wilson into a compact combat zone full of tanks, helicopters, infantry, gun emplacements, and enormous hostile machines. Players choose from a growing arsenal of guns, rocket launchers, grenades, lasers, and heavier experimental weapons, carrying multiple options at once and swapping them to handle different threats. The loop centers on clearing objectives, wrecking military hardware, rescuing civilians, and smashing large amounts of scenery while managing ammo and positioning. Missions can be replayed to improve performance and experiment with loadouts, while the XD edition makes the originally Xbox-exclusive cult title far more approachable through cleaner visuals, widescreen and 4K support, improved controls, and a more forgiving save system.

What separates it from other mech games is its unfiltered commitment to the premise: the President does not negotiate with a coup when he has a giant robot and a grenade launcher. Its levels are less about intricate simulation than immediate destruction, explosive target prioritization, and the pleasure of turning a familiar landmark into a war zone. FromSoftware’s early design sensibilities show through in the chunky machines, demanding encounters, and unusual energy, though it plays nothing like Dark Souls or Armored Core’s more technical entries. Fans of EDF, arcade-era mech shooters, and over-the-top action games find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should arrive ready for a rough-edged but immensely charming blast from a stranger era.
