Moscow’s ruined underground becomes far more claustrophobic when every gas-mask seal, trembling flashlight beam, and improvised weapon is handled with your own hands. Metro Awakening is a narrative-first VR shooter and survival-horror adventure set in 2028, long before the familiar events of Metro 2033. You play Serdar, a doctor driven into radiation-soaked tunnels by the need to find medicine for his missing wife, while nightmares and supernatural visions steadily blur what is real. The mood is oppressive rather than action-movie loud: each abandoned platform, flooded passage, and shadowy station feels like a place where something may already be watching.

Progress involves moving through semi-linear Metro environments, scavenging ammunition and supplies, listening to story encounters, and choosing when to sneak past danger or fight through it. Gunplay revolves around the series’ rough, handmade firearms, with VR interactions making reloads, weapon handling, mask management, and light sources feel deliberately physical under pressure. Filters run down, ammunition remains scarce, and a failing torch can turn a routine search into a panicked scramble, especially when mutants or armed bandits close in. Combat rewards deliberate aim and awareness over reckless shooting, while exploration often pays off with useful resources and extra environmental detail.

What separates Metro Awakening from a conventional VR shooter is how naturally its survival systems support its horror atmosphere rather than exist as busywork. The underground’s decayed Soviet-industrial spaces, strange spiritual imagery, and personal story give it more emotional weight than a simple monster hunt, even when the path forward remains focused and linear. VR is not a novelty layered onto an existing campaign here; it makes the series’ signature tension—checking your mask, fumbling for shells, and peering into black tunnels—feel immediate. Fans of Half-Life: Alyx, Into the Radius, and the earlier Metro games should find plenty to like, while newcomers can follow Serdar’s self-contained origins story without prior knowledge of the franchise.
