Play alternates between story-focused travel aboard the Aurora and large, open-ended regions packed with abandoned shelters, bandit camps, cult compounds, side missions, and hidden supplies. Gunfights are harsh and scrappy, with customizable weapons that can be modified at workbenches or maintained in the field; dirty firearms jam, ammunition remains scarce, and a cracked gas-mask filter can turn exploration into a panic. Stealth is often the smarter option, letting Artyom use darkness, suppressed weapons, distraction, and nonlethal takedowns to avoid escalating encounters. Survival systems stay immersive rather than overly punishing, as players scavenge crafting materials, manage medkits and filters, and use a map and compass instead of intrusive objective markers.

Metro Exodus stands apart by blending the authored atmosphere of a linear shooter with the freedom of compact open-world survival spaces. Each region feels distinct, not just visually but mechanically, from boat travel through monster-filled water to dust storms that transform desert firefights, while player choices influence companion relationships and the ending. 4A Games’ attention to sound, lighting, weather, and environmental storytelling makes even a quiet ruined farmhouse feel threatening. Fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Fallout’s wasteland exploration, or the previous Metro games should feel at home, though newcomers can also jump in if they want a slow-burning, story-led FPS that rewards caution over reckless shooting.
