Middle Evil: The Priest

A cursed medieval village becomes the battleground for a young priest armed with faith, steel, and a surprisingly hands-on approach to exorcism. Middle Evil: The Priest is a 2D indie adventure with cartoon-styled visuals, but its tone leans into graveyards, haunted churches, and the constant threat of supernatural ambushes. The central task is clear: aid the villagers and survive seven nights of prayers to drive the darkness from their church. Skeletons, ghosts, vampires, and other infernal creatures ensure that even a modest village errand can turn into a desperate fight for survival.

Play revolves around moving through the village, speaking with its inhabitants, purchasing useful supplies, and confronting monsters with a sword and holy tools. The priest carries a cross, censer, holy book, and other equipment, while potions and items from local merchants help keep him alive during increasingly dangerous encounters. Its most distinctive system involves learning and arranging words to create miracles, turning spells into a small puzzle of choosing the right sacred phrase for the situation. Death does not simply send you back to a checkpoint: defeat leads to the Underworld, where health and stamina upgrades offer a roguelite-style chance to return stronger and attempt the night again.

Rather than pursuing realistic medieval horror, the game mixes cozy village spaces with gloomy afterlife scenes and exaggerated 2D animation. That contrast gives it a scrappy, old-school adventure feel, especially when quiet exploration abruptly gives way to undead attacks. The seven-night structure provides a focused goal instead of an enormous open world, while the upgrade loop makes failure part of the intended progression. Players who enjoy compact indie action adventures, supernatural folklore, and lightly experimental spellcasting systems will find more to like here than those seeking polished combat or a deep narrative epic.
