A grim religious war forms the backdrop for a tightly focused action-platformer about faith, persecution, and the cost of obedience. Set during the fourth Witch War, Minoria follows Sister Semilla and her young companion Fran as they investigate a forbidden rite blamed on supposed witches. The Sacred Office frames its campaign as protection for ordinary people, but the world’s ruined villages, frightened citizens, and condemned outsiders give the journey a deliberately uneasy tone. Although it carries an anime-inspired visual identity, the mood is closer to a melancholy dark fantasy than a cheerful adventure.

Combat centers on deliberate sword strikes, ranged arrows, magic spells, evasive rolls, and precisely timed parries. Enemies hit hard, so success comes from learning attack patterns, managing spacing, and choosing when to spend stamina-like defensive opportunities rather than simply mashing attacks. Exploration moves through interconnected 2D areas filled with alternate routes, hidden upgrades, save points, merchants, environmental hazards, and boss arenas, while equipment and relics expand survivability and spell options. The campaign is more streamlined than a huge open-ended Metroidvania, but optional secrets and different difficulty settings reward players who want to search every corridor or sharpen their combat skills.

Bombservice’s hand-painted backdrops and cel-shaded character models give Minoria a distinct storybook appearance without softening its violent subject matter. Its animation makes parries and dodges readable, while the soundtrack and sparse dialogue maintain a somber sense of pilgrimage through a society consumed by fanaticism. As a spiritual successor to Momodora, it retains that series’ responsive, boss-driven combat but presents it in a more ambitious HD style and a more overtly political narrative. Fans of Momodora, Hollow Knight, or compact Souls-like action games should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value boss encounters and atmosphere over a massive map; newcomers can also settle in through the more forgiving settings, though patience remains essential.
