Mundaun

A remote Swiss valley becomes the stage for a deeply unsettling folk-horror mystery, rendered in scratchy hand-drawn pencil work that makes every field, barn, and mountain path feel unstable. Curdin returns to the village of Mundaun after his grandfather dies in a suspicious fire, only to find that old rituals, local myths, and something far more malicious still shape the lives of its isolated residents. The mood is quiet rather than relentlessly loud: long stretches of lonely alpine travel give way to sudden encounters with grotesque figures and disturbing revelations. Its black-and-white visual identity turns the familiar beauty of the Alps into a place where reality seems only loosely held together.

Most of the adventure unfolds in first person as Curdin searches buildings, speaks with odd locals, gathers useful items, and follows clues toward the mountain summit. Environmental puzzles are central to progress, asking players to pay attention to practical objects, strange machinery, locked routes, and the logic of the surrounding landscape instead of simply hunting for abstract keys. Hostile creatures occasionally force you to fight or escape, while the fear-resistance system adds tension by slowing Curdin as panic rises, making a bad situation feel increasingly difficult to control. Traversal is more varied than a typical walking horror game, with vehicles such as sleds and hay-moving equipment helping you cross the valley’s meadows, rocky slopes, and snowbound heights.

Mundaun stands apart through its commitment to Alpine folklore and its deliberately rough, pencilled presentation; it looks less like polished blockbuster horror and more like a nightmare sketched into the margins of an old storybook. The world is semi-open enough to reward detours, collectible finds, and close inspection, yet the narrative remains focused on uncovering the truth behind one family tragedy. Combat is intentionally simple and can feel awkward, but that vulnerability supports the game’s oppressive atmosphere rather than undermining it. Players who enjoy the slow-burn unease of Amnesia, the rural dread of Resident Evil Village, or narrative explorations built around puzzles and folklore should find this a memorable, distinctive horror adventure.
