Steel corridors, alien hives, and the constant threat of an ambush define Natural Selection 2, a multiplayer shooter where every firefight is tied to a larger war for territory and survival. Human marines rely on guns, armor, technology, and disciplined squads, while the Kharaa strike from vents, walls, and dark corners as fast-evolving extraterrestrial predators. Its mood lands somewhere between the tense teamwork of Left 4 Dead and the strategic pressure of a real-time strategy match, with a single mistake capable of opening an entire base to invasion. Matches build from fragile early scouting into chaotic endgame assaults involving towering aliens, powered defenses, and heavily armed exosuits.

Players choose either a frontline combat role or the all-important Commander position. Marines push through interconnected sci-fi facilities with rifles, shotguns, flamethrowers, grenade launchers, jetpacks, and mechanized Exosuits, while alien players select specialized creatures suited to scouting, support, hit-and-run attacks, or brute-force destruction. Commanders view the action from above, spending resources to establish bases, research upgrades, expand into captured territory, reinforce allies with supplies, and coordinate the team’s next objective. Victory comes from destroying the enemy command structure, but reaching it demands map control, intelligent resource spending, and communication; a group of skilled fighters can still lose if its economy and infrastructure collapse.

What separates Natural Selection 2 from ordinary class-based shooters is that no two players are doing exactly the same job for long. A Skulk’s wall-running ambushes, a Gorge’s tunnels and defensive construction, a Lerk’s aerial support, and the terrifying late-game Onos give the alien faction a genuinely different rhythm from the marine arsenal. The asymmetry runs deeper than cosmetic faction design: aliens grow their power organically, whereas marines construct and power theirs through technology. It remains an excellent pick for players who enjoy the coordination of Squad, the class variety of Team Fortress 2, and the strategic decisions of StarCraft, though newcomers should expect a demanding learning curve and benefit greatly from playing with communicative teammates.
