Crow is not here to save kingdoms; he is here to make their rulers miserable, abduct their royalty, and build a reputation as the world’s most unapologetic supervillain. Nefarious is a bright, hand-drawn 2D action-platformer that flips the usual rescue-the-princess formula into a gleefully destructive campaign. Each of its five kingdoms has a distinct visual identity, from familiar fantasy territory to stranger themed lands, while the humor keeps the tone more Saturday-morning-cartoon than grim villain origin story. The central joke works because the game commits to it: heroes are obstacles, royal guards are expendable, and collateral damage is practically part of Crow’s job description.

Levels generally ask Crow to push through enemy-filled stages, reach a princess, seize her, and make it back out alive as the kingdom reacts. He jumps, dashes, attacks with his gauntlet, avoids traps, and fights through platforming sequences built around tight movement and enemy patterns rather than open-ended exploration. Captured princesses are more than plot devices, since each one changes Crow’s abilities or movement options and gives later sections their own mechanical wrinkle. Boss encounters provide the biggest reversal, casting Crow as the oversized threat while a would-be hero tries to survive his attacks, turning familiar platformer climaxes into entertaining villain showcases. The campaign favors brisk, linear stages and demands solid timing, especially when hazards, pursuing enemies, and escape sequences start to overlap.

Its strongest feature is the perspective switch: Nefarious understands that playing the bad guy should mean more than wearing a black cape while completing heroic chores. Expressive animation, colorful environments, and punchy comedy give it a personality that separates it from more serious retro-styled platformers. The princess-specific powers and inverted boss fights prevent the adventure from feeling like a single repeated gag, even if experienced genre players may find the overall challenge manageable. Anyone who enjoys the clean level structure of Shovel Knight, the cartoon energy of Rayman, or a platformer with a mischievous sense of humor finds plenty to like, while newcomers get an approachable action game with a memorable premise.
