Defeating enemies feeds into crafting, letting Azel turn gathered resources into equipment and supplies that help her endure increasingly dangerous sections of the journey. Text skipping and event skipping options also make repeat attempts, alternate scenes, and a second playthrough far less tedious.

The strongest appeal comes from its mix of detailed character illustrations and old-school pixel-art exploration, which gives the game a distinctly handmade RPG Maker-style charm. Niplheim feels hostile without becoming relentlessly grim, largely because the cast’s conversations keep cutting through the tension with jokes and personality.
