No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle keeps the series’ gleefully trashy anime-meets-grindhouse attitude intact, mixing bloody swordplay, crude jokes, pop-culture nonsense, and surprisingly stylish boss introductions. The story never plays completely straight, but its escalating feuds give Travis’ chaotic quest more bite than a simple tournament climb.

Most of the action revolves around ranked assassination missions, where Travis cuts through enemy arenas before facing a distinctive boss with their own fighting style and personality. His beam katana delivers quick strikes, charged blows, grapples, throws, dodges, and brutal finishing moves, while dual-wielding opens up a more aggressive combat option for players who prefer offense over caution. Battery management returns, so a moment spent recharging can leave Travis exposed, and higher difficulties demand better positioning rather than blind button-mashing. Shinobu and Henry become playable in selected sections, offering a nimble jumping-focused approach and a rapid, powerful sword style that break up Travis’ familiar rhythm. Between major jobs, retro-styled 8-bit side activities provide cash for training and upgrades, turning the grind into a deliberately silly arcade detour.

Its best quality is the commitment to excess: every assassin encounter feels like a strange performance, backed by bold UI design, sharp music, and director Suda51’s unmistakably offbeat humor. The sequel trims some of the original’s wandering downtime, making it a more direct action game while preserving the intentionally awkward, rebellious charm that defines the series. Players who enjoy the boss-driven structure of Devil May Cry, the irreverence of Lollipop Chainsaw, or stylish action games that value personality as much as technical combat should find plenty to enjoy. Newcomers can follow the central revenge plot, but returning fans get the most from its callbacks, sharper pacing, and amplified chaos.
