Prehistoric beasts and rival civilizations collide in a colorful real-time strategy adventure where a trained dinosaur can be as valuable as an army of soldiers. ParaWorld places stranded explorers in a strange parallel realm populated by mammoths, raptors, giant reptiles, and human societies built around very different cultures. Its campaign follows the mystery of this lost world while moving between lush jungles, icy regions, deserts, and coastal battlefields. The tone is more pulpy adventure than grim historical warfare, but its battles still demand quick decisions and careful resource management.

Matches begin with the familiar RTS routine of gathering food, wood, and stone, constructing a settlement, and expanding into a fighting force before an opponent gains control of the map. Food comes from hunting, fishing, farms, and natural supplies, while wood and finite stone deposits make expansion and map control important. Players command three distinct factions, each with its own buildings, troops, technologies, heroes, and dinosaur options, so a Norse-style force does not approach combat like the mounted Dustriders or the mystic Dragon Clan. Land engagements form the heart of the action, though naval units and sea routes can matter on maps with accessible water; large armies can also be organized into formations, helping keep a chaotic charge from becoming an uncontrollable mob.

The dinosaur focus gives ParaWorld its clearest identity: beasts serve as mounts, war machines, support units, and intimidating frontline muscle rather than mere scenery. Its bright 3D presentation and globe-trotting campaign setting distinguish it from the stricter medieval framing of Age of Empires, while faction asymmetry adds more personality than many strategy games of its era. Controls and interface conventions show their age, and veterans of modern RTS titles may miss the polish and competitive depth of newer releases. Even so, it remains a worthwhile classic for players who enjoy base-building strategy, single-player campaigns, and the simple pleasure of sending warriors into battle atop dinosaurs.
