Project Warlock stands apart from many retro shooters by pairing its deliberately pixelated presentation with meaningful character development and an unusually broad selection of weapons. Each of its five themed worlds culminates in a large boss encounter, while secret hunting and different upgrade paths give repeat runs more purpose than a straightforward level-by-level blastathon. Its movement and combat have the immediate, no-nonsense appeal of classic Doom, but the progression system and genre-hopping settings keep it from feeling like a mere imitation. Fans of DUSK, Ion Fury, and Wolfenstein-style corridor crawls should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers can start on lower difficulties before testing more demanding builds and enemy encounters.
