Prototype

Manhattan becomes a quarantined feeding ground where soldiers, civilians, and mutated infected all become tools for a man who no longer knows who he is. Prototype casts Alex Mercer as a ruthless antihero carrying the Blacklight virus, able to reshape his body into weapons and pursue the people behind his creation. The tone is gleefully violent and paranoid, mixing a biohazard conspiracy thriller with the kind of open-world power fantasy that lets you tear through a city block in seconds. Rather than saving New York, Alex often makes its escalating chaos worse as he searches for answers.

Movement is the real star: Alex sprints up skyscrapers, clears streets in enormous leaps, glides across rooftops, and rebounds off traffic without losing momentum. Combat revolves around instantly swapping between claws, blade arms, a crushing hammer, a whip-like tendril, defensive armor, and a shield, then pairing those powers with stolen firearms or devastating area attacks. Consuming targets restores health while allowing Alex to copy their identity, access restricted military locations, and absorb memories that reveal more of the plot. Missions range from hunts and infiltration jobs to large-scale fights against tanks, helicopters, elite Blackwatch troops, and increasingly grotesque mutants, while collected upgrades expand health, mobility, and combat options.

What separates Prototype from most sandbox action games is how little it asks you to behave like an ordinary person. Disguises turn crowds and enemy bases into infiltration puzzles, while the ability to suddenly drop the act and become a living weapon makes every encounter feel volatile. Its 2009 visuals and mission structure show their age, and the story’s grim delivery can feel blunt, but the speed, destruction, and body-morphing combat still have real punch. Players who enjoy the traversal of Spider-Man, the chaos of Hulk-style destruction, or the aggressive power growth of Infamous find plenty to enjoy, especially if they prefer a darker, less heroic spin on the open-world superhero formula.
