A neon-soaked wasteland becomes stranger and more alive the further you push into it. RAD is a third-person action roguelike set after humanity has already survived two separate apocalypses, leaving behind the toxic, unstable Fallow. You play a young scavenger armed with a baseball bat and a stubborn willingness to venture where nobody else can, fighting grotesque creatures while trying to restore a future for the last remaining communities. Its colorful cartoon look keeps the mood playful, but the setting is still full of radioactive danger, mutated wildlife, and ruined civilization.

Each run sends you through shifting, procedurally arranged regions where you smash enemies, search for resources, activate restoration points, and open routes deeper into the wilderness. Combat is simple but energetic, built around bat swings, dodges, charged attacks, and powers gained by exposing yourself to radiation. Mutations can give your character explosive skull attacks, a snake-like head, bat wings, extra limbs, or other bizarre advantages, turning the usual roguelike power-up system into a deliberately grotesque transformation. Death ends a run, but long-term upgrades and growing familiarity with enemies, biomes, and mutation combinations make repeated attempts more manageable.

RAD stands out because it treats mutation as both its visual identity and its main tactical system: becoming less human is the price of becoming capable enough to survive. The world’s chunky 3D art, saturated colors, synth-heavy atmosphere, and absurd creature designs give it a distinct Saturday-morning-cartoon-meets-toxic-wasteland personality. Its runs are more approachable than the punishing dungeon crawls of Hades or Dead Cells, though the combat lacks the same precision and depth. Players who enjoy Double Fine’s offbeat humor, light roguelike progression, and experimenting with unpredictable builds find plenty to like, while genre veterans should approach it for its style and mutation gimmicks rather than a demanding mastery challenge.
