Rad blasts through levels with a growing arsenal, beginning with the reliable infinite-ammo Bolt Blaster and expanding into more specialized weapons such as the fire-spreading Phoenix Cannon. Platforming asks for careful timing around hazards, moving platforms, hidden routes, and enemies, while secret rooms reward players willing to inspect suspicious walls and take risky jumps. Dusty also takes control during Pixelverse sections, where the console enters broken spaces behind the levels to repair glitches through short puzzle-like challenges. Radical Edition broadens the package with fresh stages, abilities, an overworld, extra collectibles, mini-games, playable characters, and two-player local co-op, while Battle Mode lets friends compete rather than cooperate.

Its strongest feature is the commitment to old-school design: levels are linear enough to keep momentum high, but packed with secrets that encourage replaying them for missed items. The presentation feels authentically retro without sacrificing readable animation or responsive controls, and Andrew Hulshult’s synth-and-MIDI-flavored score gives each firefight extra punch. Difficulty can be unforgiving in later sections, especially for anyone expecting a casual mascot platformer, but checkpoints keep repeated attempts from becoming exhausting. Players who enjoy the weapon-heavy platforming of Contra, Jazz Jackrabbit, or Metal Slug’s arcade energy should find plenty to like, while co-op makes it an approachable choice for friends who want a brash, nostalgic action romp.
