Raging Bytes

A ruined city becomes a tight, anxious survival tale as police officer Ben wakes in a hospital to find the streets claimed by the dead. Raging Bytes frames its outbreak through the familiar rhythms of a classic zombie movie: missing answers, fragile alliances, barricaded rooms, and the constant fear that the living may be as dangerous as the infected. Ben’s search for safety brings him together with doctor Barbra, then pushes the pair toward a police station that offers far more dread than rescue. The tone stays pulpy and dramatic rather than brutally graphic, using pixel-art horror to sell its grim scenes without dwelling on gore.

Movement plays out across hostile urban areas where zombies visibly pursue the party, creating a useful layer of tension before combat even begins. Contact triggers turn-based battles, with Ben and his allies using weapons, skills, healing items, and careful target selection to survive groups of enemies. Positioning on the field matters because wandering too close to several undead can lead to consecutive fights and quickly drain resources. Zombies also retain echoes of their former lives in their behavior, making encounters feel less like generic monster battles and more like desperate confrontations with a city’s lost population. As the story progresses, new survivors, equipment, and escalating threats expand the party’s options while keeping the focus on moving through dangerous enclosed spaces.

Jiro Ishii’s involvement gives the narrative a stronger thriller sensibility than many small-scale retro RPGs, particularly in its use of suspicion, personal loss, and uneasy human relationships. The game’s compact structure works in its favor: it delivers a concentrated campaign instead of padding its apocalypse with endless scavenging or open-world busywork. Its pixel presentation and command-based battles evoke classic console RPGs, while the setting recalls zombie cinema more than fantasy adventuring. Fans of Kemco-style RPGs, old-school Japanese menu combat, and contained Resident Evil-like survival scenarios find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value story momentum over demanding action mechanics.
