Rainbow Cotton

A candy-hungry witch takes to the skies in a cheerful rail shooter where fairy-tale scenery, colorful monsters, and oversized bosses fly past at arcade speed. Cotton rides her broom through moonlit streets, submerged woodland, and castles suspended above the clouds while pursuing the coveted Willow Candy and stopping the demon Tweed. Rainbow Cotton keeps the playful attitude of the long-running Cotton series, but trades its usual side-scrolling action for fully 3D flight stages. The result is a bright, slightly chaotic throwback with an anime sensibility and a constant stream of visual spectacle.

Each level moves Cotton along a set route, leaving players to steer around hazards, shoot incoming enemies, gather gems and power-ups, and make smart use of limited magic. Collected upgrades strengthen her standard attacks, while screen-clearing spells unleash elemental destruction when enemy swarms become overwhelming. The remaster improves the feel of the original Dreamcast release with more responsive camera behavior, refined targeting options, and a lock-on system that makes chasing targets less clumsy. Branching paths through certain stages encourage repeat runs, especially for players chasing higher scores, better routes, and a cleaner boss performance.

What makes the game memorable is its unusual combination of cute ’em up charm and behind-the-character shooting, closer in structure to Space Harrier or Panzer Dragoon than a traditional horizontal shmup. Its presentation receives a welcome upgrade through sharper visuals, added lighting and particle work, plus fully localized animated story scenes that make the silliness easier to enjoy. A separate Retro Mode preserves the older feel for Dreamcast purists, while the modernized version is far more approachable for newcomers. Fans of arcade shooters who value personality over grim seriousness find plenty to enjoy here, though veterans should expect a compact, score-driven adventure rather than a sprawling campaign.
