Rayman Origins (GOG)

A hand-painted 2D platformer bursts with color, slapstick energy, and some of the sharpest movement in the genre. Rayman Origins sends its limbless hero, the bumbling Globox, and the tiny Teensies across the Glade of Dreams after the Darktoons upset its fragile peace. Every region feels like a feverishly animated cartoon, from jungles that bounce underfoot to icy caverns, cooking-themed stages, and volcanic ruins. The mood stays playful and absurd, but its later obstacle courses demand serious timing.

Levels revolve around running, jumping, gliding, wall-running, swimming, and punching through swarms of oddball enemies while collecting Lums and rescuing imprisoned Electoons. New movement skills arrive gradually, so early stages teach the fundamentals before the campaign starts layering collapsing platforms, chasing screens, moving hazards, and precision landings into frantic gauntlets. Most stages reward repeated runs: reaching every hidden area, gathering enough Lums for medals, and completing fast-paced treasure chases unlocks additional content. Up to four people can play together locally, with teammates able to revive one another after a mistake, although the resulting screen-filling chaos can make demanding sections harder rather than easier.

What separates Rayman Origins from many modern platformers is how responsive it feels; momentum is readable, jumps have satisfying weight, and nearly every backdrop or enemy has a ridiculous animation worth noticing. The UbiArt presentation has aged exceptionally well, pairing bold illustrated scenery with lively music and expressive sound effects instead of chasing realism. It has the collectible structure and escalating challenge of classic Mario, while the speed and physical comedy give it a personality all its own. Newcomers can enjoy simply reaching the credits, but completionists and veteran platforming fans find far more to master in its secret paths, medal targets, and punishing late-game trials.
