Red Faction: Armageddon (v1.01 & ALL DLC)

Mars has become a claustrophobic underground battleground where collapsing tunnels are as dangerous as the creatures stalking them. Red Faction: Armageddon shifts the series away from open-surface rebellion and into a more focused third-person action campaign, following miner Darius Mason after a disastrous event destroys the planet’s terraforming system. With storms ravaging the surface, colonists retreat beneath the red planet and awaken a hostile alien force buried in its depths. The tone is pulpy sci-fi disaster fiction: grim enough to sell the apocalypse, but happy to let players solve problems by blowing enormous holes through everything nearby.

Darius fights through mines, ruined settlements, laboratories, and alien nests using conventional firearms alongside the series’ signature destruction technology. The Nano Forge lets him pulverize walls and support beams with a devastating shockwave, while the Reconstructor reverses the damage, allowing broken bridges, cover, and vital machinery to be rebuilt in the middle of combat. Weapons such as the Magnet Gun turn scrap and enemies into ammunition, encouraging creative kills rather than simple shooting-gallery tactics. Missions remain largely linear, with environmental puzzles, enemy ambushes, and escalating boss encounters driving the pace; the four-player Infestation mode adds co-op survival against waves of aliens, while Ruin mode challenges players to demolish structures efficiently for high scores.

What makes Armageddon memorable is its push-and-pull between destruction and repair. Few action games let players tear apart a room to expose enemies, then instantly rebuild a safe route or defensive barrier when the chaos turns against them. Its tighter structure means it lacks the broad guerrilla freedom of Red Faction: Guerrilla, but the underground setting gives its destructible spaces a more deliberate, combat-focused design. Fans of Gears of War-style third-person firefights who want heavier physics toys and satisfyingly breakable environments find plenty to enjoy, while longtime Red Faction players should approach it as a streamlined spin-off rather than a direct continuation of Guerrilla’s open-world formula.
