ReX

A robotics complex becomes a hostile machine-and-undead nightmare when a rogue researcher weaponizes corpses and seizes control of the facility. ReX is a tough, retro-styled action platformer built around a lone mercenary’s mission to cut through cyborg zombies, malfunctioning defenses, and increasingly dangerous experiments. Its chunky pixel visuals and driving chiptune soundtrack give the adventure the feel of an unforgiving 8-bit run-and-gun, while the premise keeps the action focused on a direct hunt for the scientist behind the outbreak.

Combat revolves around moving through compact, enemy-packed stages, avoiding hazards, and blasting mechanical undead before they overwhelm you. Enemies become more demanding as the campaign advances, requiring sharper reactions and smarter use of the weapons available, while bosses act as major endurance tests at the end of key stretches. Coins gathered during levels fund purchases in the weapon store, adding a basic but useful progression layer: careful players can expand their arsenal instead of relying entirely on starting gear. The full campaign contains 55 stages across five chapters, and its deliberately steep challenge means repeated deaths are part of learning layouts, enemy patterns, and safe routes; controller support is included, though menus still need a keyboard.

What separates ReX from more elaborate modern platform shooters is its stripped-down commitment to old-school difficulty and immediate action. There is little downtime between threats, so success comes from timing jumps, managing space, and recognizing how each cyborg foe behaves rather than from elaborate RPG systems or exploration. Seven original 8-bit tracks help sustain the arcade energy, and the short-level structure makes it easy to retry a troublesome section without losing the pace. Fans of demanding retro action in the vein of classic run-and-guns, as well as players who enjoy mastering punishing pixel-art platformers, should find plenty to like, but newcomers should expect a rougher learning curve than the presentation initially suggests.
